Local SEO basics: how to show up for 'near me' searches

Local SEO basics in plain English - how to rank for "roofer near me" searches and get found locally. What matters most, and where to start.

Want to get found when someone searches "roofer near me" or "[service] near me"? Local SEO is how, and it's not the mystery people make it out to be. Google ranks the businesses it can trust and verify - and there are a handful of things that decide whether that's you or the next tradesman down the road. Here's what matters most, and how to do it without learning a single piece of jargon.

The local SEO checklist

Work down this list, in this order, and you'll be doing more than most of your local competitors:

  • 1. Get a proper website. It's the foundation everything else hangs off. Google sends people to websites, not social pages, and a clean, fast site that works on a phone is the single biggest factor in showing up locally. We've covered why trades need a website and what pages it needs in more detail.
  • 2. Set up your Google Business Profile. It's free, and it's how you appear on Google Maps and in the map section at the top of local searches. Add your real address (or your service area if you work from a van), your phone number, your opening hours and your website link.
  • 3. Be consistent everywhere. Your business name, phone number and address must match exactly - on your website, your Google profile, Checkatrade, Yell, your Facebook page, everywhere. Small differences confuse Google and cost you trust.
  • 4. Mention your services and areas in plain English. A page that says "we cover Warrington, Stockton Heath and Lymm" and lists your actual services is what Google matches to "roofer near me" searches. Say what you do, and where you do it, out loud.
  • 5. Ask for reviews. Genuine reviews are the strongest local trust signal there is. Ask happy customers to leave one on Google - a steady trickle beats a sudden burst.
  • 6. Keep your site fresh. Google favours websites that change. New photos, new reviews, new offers - regular updates tell Google you're a live business, not a leftover from 2019.

That's it. There's no secret algorithm to master. The businesses that rank for "near me" searches are the ones that have the basics done properly and kept up to date.

How do I get found locally?

By doing the checklist above and then staying patient. Local SEO is a slow burn - not an overnight fix - and that's exactly why so many businesses never bother. The ones that do the basics and keep at them pull ahead within a few months, while everyone else is still chasing the "secret" that doesn't exist.

Two things to know while you're waiting:

  • It compounds. Every review, every page, every consistent listing makes the next one count for more. There's no point where it stops working.
  • The map is half the battle. A strong Google Business Profile gets you into the map pack at the top of local results - the three businesses people click first. For local trades, that's often worth more than the organic results below it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to work? Usually a few months to see real movement, because Google needs time to notice your site, your profile and your reviews. That's normal - and it's why starting now beats waiting until you need the work.

Do I need to understand SEO to benefit from it? No. You need the basics done properly - a website, a Google Business Profile, consistent details, reviews - and somebody keeping them fresh. You don't need to touch analytics or understand algorithms.

Can a Facebook page do the same thing? No. Facebook pages don't rank in local search the way websites do, and they're not eligible for the Google map pack. We've written the full comparison: website vs Facebook page for small business.

What if I'm fully booked? Does this still matter? Yes - because local SEO is what keeps you findable for the quieter months. We've explained why in do I need a website if I'm fully booked?.
